Born on March 26, 1965 Prakash Raj, pursued his undergraduate studies in Commerce in Bangalore. Like most young men in their early twenties, it was a time when he was restlessly searching for an identity. An avid fan of Shakespeare and Kannada literature, he soon found out that he had a flair for acting and the world of theatre. His career in theatre exteneded for ten long years with him acting both in Kannada and English plays. He then introduced himself to the media of TV in which he was recognised and soon took to writing scripts for the TV seriels and act at the same time.

Renowned Tamil film director, K. Balchander recognised Prakash Raj's handsome looks and talented acting and offered him the lead role in the successful film Duet.. A couple of more films later he became a popular Tamil star. Film producer-director, A.M.Ratnam introduced Prakash Raj to Telugu movies in his film Sankalpam. He got the instant appreciation and acceptance of the Telugu audience.

This followed quite a few Telugu films, which despite his good performance did not fare well at the box - office. Disappointed, he took a short break and but recuperated immediately and returned spirited than ever to do Suswagatham (1997) and Choodalani Vundi which ended up being the most successful of his Telugu films.
