------------------ Pioneer photographer
No discussion on photography in Hyderabad is complete
without a mention of the legendary Deen Dayal Raja.
This man has the unique distinction of ha ving
introduced photography to Hyderabad.
Born in 1844 at Sardana near Meerut, he
was officially engaged by the British to compile an
album of monuments as a gift to Queen Victoria. His
reputation preceded him in Hyderabad. The Mir Mahboob
Ali Khan also known as the Nizam VI was so
impressed with his work that he persuaded him to settle
in Hyderabad and appointed him as the Court Photographer.
This patronage served as an initiative to open a branch
of the Deen Dayal and Sons in Secunderabad. In
recognition of his prolific work, the Nizam awarded
him the title of Raja Musavar Jung Bahadur.
Through the scores of years, the firm that Deen Dayal
founded has continued under the management of successive
family members. A collection of his pictures was recently
sold to the National Museum in New Delhi. Some
of his photographs can be found in many old houses in
Hyderabad.
