Azharuddin epitomizes Hyderabad cricket. His
rare style in the game makes him a batsman worth watching.
He discovered his passion for
cricket when he was in the school cricket team. From
then on, there was no looking back for him. He began
by honing his skills as a fielder and batsman.
In keeping with the spirit of the competitive age,
Azhar took Hyderabad cricket and Indian cricket to the
acme. He eased his way to three centuries in his first
three Tests and announced the appearance of a new demi-god
on the Indian batting scene. One of India's finest cricketers
and easily the most celebrated and successful Captain
to have led the country in international cricket, he
still holds the world record of scoring three successive
centuries in his first three Tests.
He is an instinctive strategist who has had a string
of victories in major tournaments and Test series. Having
scored the highest runs (over 9000) in One Day International
Cricket, he excels in many others. The extensive
use of his wrists, has made him a master at playing
spin bowling. His stylish and elegant strokes are a
treat to the eyes. His breathtaking fielding inspired
the Indian team to become one of the good fielding sides
in the world.
ACHIEVEMENTS:
- He remains the only player in the 117 - year history
of Test cricket to score centuries in each of his first
three matches - all against England.
- He has the distinction of scoring the fastest century
in one-day Internationals. He scored a century in just
62 balls. During the course of this match - winning
performance he scored a 108 (not out) which came in
65 deliveries and included 3 sixes and 10 boundaries.
- He has captained India through maximum number of
matches in limited overs cricket, surpassing the previous
best, of 74 matches, captained by Kapil Dev.
- He also has the distinction of scoring the most
runs in one-day internationals for India - 4762 runs
from 178 matches, with 3 centuries and 26 fifties.
