Giant Hypermarket which was opened in the cityrecently
is a consumer's paradise. Set up at a cost of
20 crores, The Giant Hypermarket is India's
first complete hypermarket catering to the needs
of the consumers with a wide range of products.
The Giant Hypermarket is a part of the RPG Group
that operates 65 Foodworld stores, 14 Musicworld
stores and 20 Health & Glow stores, each contributing
in a significant manner to retail consolidation
in its area of operation.
Hypermarket, located in Musheerabad is spread
over an area of 1,20,000 square feet and stocks
around 20,000 items across a 50,000 sq ft area.
The Hypermarket draws a crowd of 16,000 shoppers
everyday which goes up to 24,000 during weekends.
The main objective of this hypermarket is to cater
to customers, institutional buyers and the large
fraternity of small mofussil retailers. According
to Mr Raghu Pillai, chief executive officer
of the retail sector of RPG Enterprises, this
is the first hypermarket store, and four more,
one each in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore
are being planned. "The lessons learnt from
this new venture would be consolidated and a national
roll out is planned over a 5-7 year time frame
across the top 20 cities. The store is expected
to gross Rs 1 billion by the 4th year," said
Mr Pillai speaking about the future plans. The
Giant Hypermarket of the city has an investment
of over Rs 200 million.

said Pillai describing the market. He said while
Foodworld store was essentially a grocery outlet,
the hypermarket stores will have a wide range
of product categories which include groceries,
food, home needs, fresh food, garments and consumer
durables. All these are sold at low prices, which
is possible due to the economies of large-scale
operations. "The biggest advantage of
shopping at The Giant Hypermarket is that products
are sold at rates below their minimum retail price,"
said Mr Pillai.
