NIGHT AT COUNTRY CLUB |
Celebration of Halloween
night is catching up although it is wholly a western concept.
Since last two years it is being organised by various
clubs of the twin cities.

The Country Club celebrated Halloween night on October
28 much before the actual date of October 31. The hall
in the Country Club was filled with youngsters. Everybody
followed the dress code and turned up in masks. There
were also youngsters with black cloaks, hoods and masks.
The spider and the witch, with the broom for added effect,
were the highlights of the evening. The halloween party
was also a great hit with the young and the middle aged
couples who were present in large numbers.
But what is Halloween all about? In ancient Britain and
Ireland, the Celtic festival of Samhain eve or the end
of summer was observed on October 31. This date was also
the eve of the new year in both Celtic and Anglo-Saxon
times and was the occassion for one of the ancient fire
festivals when huge bonfires were set on hilltops to frighten
away evil spirits. The souls of the dead were thought
to revisit their homes on this day and the autumn festival
acquired sinister significance with ghosts, witches, hobgoblins
and demons believed to be roaming about. Halloween was
also thought to be the most favourable time for divinations
concerning marriage, luck, health and death.
