AWAY FROM HOME - CLUBS |
Club culture was introduced to Hyderabad by the
British. The Secunderabad Club established in
1878 was the first club in the city. Indians were not
given membership. To counter this, Indians established
their own club in 1884 - the Nizam Club.
Since then, many clubs have sprung up all over the
twin cities. The only criteria for membership today
is the right attitude and money.

THE
NIZAM CLUB
|
|
--------------------------- Memories
of a bygone era
Established in 1884, the Nizam Club was first
hou sed
in the GPO building in Abids and was later
shifted to the Mahboobia Girls' School.
In 1906, the Nizam Club was moved to its current location
in the Public Garden Road. The place was originally
built by Nawab Fakrul-ul-Mulk for the British
legal arbiter who frequented Hyderabad.
Today the club nestles in idyllic splendour in the
heart of Hyderabad. In the span of a century, the club
has developed its own identity and tradition. It has
become synonymous with good Hyderabadi food. The fame
of the club's food can be traced back to a time when
Hussaini, a cook who belonged to the royal palace,
lent a hand at the club kitchen.
Since then young chefs have been trained to prep are
the delicacies that have made the club famous. Though
the club has lost some of its old time glory, the spirit
of a closely-knit family still persists here. Sherwanis
co-exist with blazers and chaste Urdu cuts the air along
with clipped English accents.
The carpeted wooden staircase, the bison-head souvenirs,
the massive chandeliers, the big bronze clock and
the arresting paintings still reflect the ethos
of a bygone era.

SECUNDERABAD
CLUB
|
|
-------------------------- Hyderabad's first club
Secunderabad Club is ideal for the boosting
of sagging spirits. Established in 1878 i n
the British Residency of the Nizam's State, the club
was initially called the Secunderabad Club Rooms.
It was situated in the area where the Tivoli cinema
hall now stands.
In 1888, the club was rechristened as United Services
Club. It underwent another renaming in 1903 as the
Secunderabad Club, by which name it is known
today. The club stands on a 20-acre site gifted by Salarjung
II to the British.
The architecture of the club is splendid. The club
house used to be the summer residence of Salar Jung
II. Equally impressive are the murals on the walls of
the lounge, done by M.M. Kaye, a distinguished
artist and the author of the bestseller - The Far Pavilionsand
her sister Belts in 1928.
Another special feature of the club is its rare collection
of books. The library has a special section for children.
Among the other facilities it offers are a large swimming
pool, well-maintained tennis and squash courts, as well
as billiards and snooker tables. The club offers good
food, both in an indoor dining room and on the lawns.
The club has an excellent supermarket, and even a petrol
station. In the approximately 120 years of its existence
the Club has undergone a great deal of change. But it
still holds a special place in the hearts of many Hyderabadis
A home away from home is the general sentiment
of the members towards the club.
